why not make the Circle optional? [cut for space]
I think if they were going to do that they should have done it from the start?
because now NO ONE would want to go there after the callenhad circle incident with all those blood mages and abominations and torture
and then of course the kirkwall circle with the disgusting abuse towards the mages there and their knight commander AND first enchanter going batshit insane
if they were to start it now it should be only certain circles maybe?? or maybe have a special different circle for mages who have had good behaviour with no suspicion on them and for children?
If it’s going to be optional civilians will probably still hound the ones that don’t go out of fear and hatredhonestly it could go either way? the callenhad circle did seem like a relatively nice place for what it was but the kirkwall one was absolute shit
So the mages that would leave may be angry at how they were treated and rebelthen of course Fenris’ argument that it would just turn into Tevinter which he is right that is a possibility, why would you want to go to a place known for holding mages down/back when you could learn by yourself and learn more powerful magic (ie blood magic)
idk I’m rambling now ahahaa
oh yeah it would take a while to work properly, but maybe this is the treaty/ceasefire that is reached at the end of the war? don’t forget, maybe no MAGES fancy going back to the circle now that they’ve tasted open air, but the non-magic public? probably hates mages even more. if the teaching positions are advertised as jobs…
I think the level of abuse Kirkwall had, they were able to get away with because of the tight control of the circle. like, if circle-attendence was optional, would the mages have stayed and become blood mages and gone batshit or before that point would they be like “fuck this shit I’m going home”?
aye, the citizens WILL hound mages outside the circle, thus encouraging those mages to go into the circle to avoid the harrassment ;D or to less populated areas, which minimizes the damage an abomination would do
the thing is that like a lot of mage children seem to be born to non-mage parents, so these kids wouldn’t be able to learn magic anywhere else, other than a circle
the purpose would be that the circle is no longer thought of as a place of oppression and instead thought of as a place of learning. once that viewpoint is achieved (not to mention the idea of An Abomination Can Come From Any Mage running through the subconscious), the vast majority of mages would be at the circle, and with the knowledge that Sure You Can Leave Everyone Just Hates You, wouldn’t that be a more effective restraining method than You Cannot Leave?
why not make the Circle optional? treat it as a college/boarding-school type thing, promote it as a place where those with the gift can learn and grow their talents under the tutelage of those with similar abilities…
…and ever so casually remind the general public that even the youngest, weakest, most harmless mage can turn into a mindless destructive killing machine that just might happen to destroy your village (but don’t worry! the Chantry’s swordsmen are specially trained to deal with such things!)
so the Circle would become a place of sanctuary from the general public who are terrified of abominations, thus encouraging mages to stay there while not ~forcing~ anyone to do anything
do you think this would work? aside from the deaths that the abominations would cause, of course, and it would be a generation or two before the full effect was reached, but then?
in house lannister we don’t say “i love you”. we push small children from tower windows to their ~death which roughly translates to “we will leave this world together as we once came into it” and i think that’s beautiful.
people do not stand up to Tywin Lannister and the ones who do get wiped off the fucking mapThere’s even a song about this.
Which is what makes people saying “Tyrion should just stand up to Tywin” even MORE FUCKING FRUSTRATING
‘cause I’m like were you not listening ten minutes ago when Cersei was like “are you familiar with the hit pop song ‘My Dad Kills Everyone Who Pisses Him Off’”
